In 2021, following the collapse of Afghanistan’s previous regime, educational classes in English, math, and literacy were launched in Bamyan province with the financial support of UN Women. These classes provided valuable learning opportunities for women of all ages, enabling approximately 150 women and girls, aged 16 to 60, to benefit from education during a time of significant upheaval. The English classes lasted six months, while the math classes were conducted over three months, and the literacy program also spanned six months. Experienced and qualified teachers were selected to deliver these courses, ensuring a high standard of education. Bamyan is one of the most deprived provinces in Afghanistan, severely impacted by war, violence, and poverty, as well as geographical challenges that hinder access to resources. The situation has worsened since the Taliban took power, as all high schools and universities have been closed to women and girls, leaving them with few opportunities to pursue their education.
Thanks to the funding from UN Women, this program has created a vital opportunity for a small number of women to receive an education and empower themselves in a challenging environment.
